Serious Fire Safety Failings -Care home put residents lives at risk

The owners of a Nottingham care home put the lives of its residents and staff at risk by not having adequate fire safety measures should a blaze have broken out. The directors of St Martin’s, in Bilborough, pleaded guilty to several offences when they appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, July 17.

They included failing to have good enough fire alarms or detectors, maintaining a means of escape, establishing safety drills or an evacuation plan, and having adequate internal fire doors for those who live and work at the St Martins Road home.

One of the charges read: “Failing to implement fire safety recommendations after an inspection was carried out, putting a person at risk of death.”

Ashwin Nepal, a director when Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service inspected in February 2023, and Samir Nath Pyakuryal, who wasn’t but now is, admitted their failings.

Nepal, 40, of Dulverton Avenue, Swindon, now waits anxiously to see if he will be sent to prison. At the same time, 52-year-old Pyakuryal, of Station Road, Harrow who entered the pleas on behalf of Revive Health Care Ltd, was told the firm would likely be hit heavily in the pocket.

Adjourning sentencing to a later date, Recorder Stuart Sprawson said: “Those who fail to look after people in care face a serious sentence and might end up going to prison. Don’t be under any illusion that is not an option.”

No further specific details about the charges, which were brought by the service, were disclosed at this week’s hearing. I

The directors, who were bailed, and Revive Health Care Ltd will be sentenced on October 17.

This recent case of a dementia care home failing to meet essential fire safety procedures highlights the critical importance of stringent fire safety measures. The owners, now awaiting sentencing, neglected essential safety requirements, including adequate fire alarms and detectors, maintaining means of escape, establishing safety drills and evacuation plans, and installing sufficient internal fire doors.
