The Northern Ireland Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) has issued a crucial warning to all residential homes, nursing homes, and independent hospitals.
According to a recent letter sent out towards the end of 2023, the number of notifications regarding the detection of Legionella bacteria in water systems has significantly increased over the past two years.
This alarming trend has prompted the RQIA to recommend the use of companies registered with the Legionella Control Association Limited (LCA) to manage and mitigate these risks. Although membership with the LCA is not mandatory, the organisation performs rigorous audits of its member companies and enforces a strict code of conduct to ensure the highest safety standards.
LFS, a proud member of the LCA, fully supports these audit procedures. We firmly believe that compliance is essential to ensure workplace water safety, particularly in healthcare settings where the stakes are higher due to the vulnerability of residents and patients.
The RQIA emphasised the importance of third-party companies adhering to the LCA’s standards, stating:
“RQIA believe that to achieve optimum water safety standards in registered and regulated premises, where the above services are carried out by third-party companies, the companies should be members of LCA.”
Sadly, this issue is not limited to Northern Ireland. There has been a rise in Legionella bacteria found in healthcare settings throughout the UK. Although the RQIA operates solely within Northern Ireland, its advocacy for a code of conduct in the water safety sector resonates with our values and commitment to implementing correct actions to safeguard those in healthcare settings.
